I hope you like this brief video of a recent walk I did using the pedway system in DTLA. I used to do tours that would use the underground pedways of Chicago to navigate the city. It always made me feel like I was exploring, building an incredibly detailed map of the area in my head. Guests always were shocked to pop up next to famous landmarks, it's easy to lose track of where you are when you're underground.
In Los Angeles, we have a pedway system too! However, it isn't underground, but elevated! The system is fairly small, but it can be used to navigate parts of Bunker Hill and the Financial District. You'll go from building to building, plaza to plaza, all while getting great views and seeing DTLA in a way that most wouldn't. These pedways reflected the, perhaps naive, notion that DTLA would become a major live/work destination in the 70s and 80s. Massive offices and hotels were constructed to court international businesses and visitors, and the pedways would facilitate easy commutes back and forth from the multitude of hotels, offices, and residential buildings. Funding went away in the 80s for the pedways, the proposed people mover for DTLA never materialized, and plans changed as they often do in LA. Now, the pedways are used by a small, but active, group of people working in DTLA. I'll be putting together a longer video about the pedways for my YouTube channel. Keep an eye out for that in the near future!
